because they always look like they're going somewhere!

The idea of objects having a life and a spirit is very intriguing to me. Several years ago I began drawing a mysterious shape that seemed, simultaneously, to be animate and inanimate. This is a new group of these, affectionately named, "grubs."

I see the work to be some sort of marriage between the background objects in George Herriman's Krazy Kat with the color and mood found in paintings by Albert Pinkham Ryder or Hercules Seger.

My initial intention was to only do some quick color sketches and, in the future, do real art. I soon realized that if the idea, not the tactile experience, is the most important consideration by the artist in the creative process, then making digital images can satisfy and tickle other senses. If I can imagine an image being done in media other than it's original, then there is an idea being communicated, not just technique. I have made these pieces look like traditional media; but I can imagine them as paintings on canvas, film or sculpture.
