These Japanese yokai, supernatural monsters, can be thought of as similar to Western demons or ogres. Japanese parents may use the oni like Western parents have used the threat of the bogeyman to frighten children. Even if the oni has not always been considered evil, it is usually thought of as a troublemaker.
